Seascape as an independent genre emerged in the Netherlands in the 17th
century. This genre has existed for several centuries. Like many others,
this artistic trend is a complex phenomenon, which covers a signifi cant
time period and refl ects problems common for every historical epoch.
The philosophy of seascape implies studying seascapes in a philosophical
aspect. The main content of the research can be divided into three stages:
studying sea painting in terms of ontology, epistemology, and methodology.
