The article is devoted to the semantics of the category of seem-
ingness in the prose and the epistolary prose of A. S. Pushkin,
to identifi cation of its closeness to the real state of affairs, i.e.
the synonymous use “seem” and “be”. The problem which is
raised in the article is about existence of pseudo-seemingness;
and the author has made an attempt to identify modus situa-
tions in which this pseudo-seemingness manifests itself
