The article considers the possibility of using a lapbook as a means of controlling the
background knowledge of primary school children formed on the basis of working with
an English fairy tale. From this point of view, the author analyses the Federal State Edu-
cational Standard for primary school, the modern conditions of education of primary
school children and the concept of “lapbook”. The latter is considered as a portfolio or
a collection of small books with pockets, which make it possible to place information
there such as drawings, small texts, diagrams and graphs in any form and on any topic.
The features of the use of a lapbook at the initial stage of primary school education are
analysed. The advantages of using a lapbook as a fi nal result of cognitive activity of a
pupil on a certain topic are highlighted.
