The paper is devoted to the relationship between freedom and necessity within
Schopenhauer’s philosophy. Regardless the declarations of the German thinker
concerning the possibility of freedom, his logic provides an opportunity to doubt its real
existence in his philosophy. Being a successor of Kant, but having not taken into account
his doctrine of transcendental unity of apperception, Schopenhauer lacks theoretical grounds of metaposition, which questions the possibility of going beyond necessity.
Key words: Schopenhauer, will, representation, subject, experience, metaposition,
metanoia, transcendental unity of apperception.
