The paper considers Arabic calligraphy as part of the contemporary
Syrian art, exceptional in the form and content, which puts forward
principles based on cultural heritage and national identity. The
paper traces the dialectics of the relationship between Arabic cal-
ligraphy and plastic arts. Four artistic trends in the contemporary
art of Syria were determined, which either rely on the traditional
style or develop independent principles of the “Arabic writing”.
