The article deals with linguistic aspects of translating modernist texts.
Despite the common opinion that Finnigans Wake by James Joyce is
not subject to translation, we consider any attempt viable, as it gives
invaluable information about recent borrowings into Russian that
might facilitate interpretation and translation of complex texts. The
latest translation of the book has revealed more accurate rendering
of complex units with multiple meanings, functions, and allusions.
All this might be explained by the expansion of oral discourse and
internet communication characterized by the lenient approach to
spelling and syntax. The decline of graphics and rise of sound allow
for wordplay like never before.
