The article deals with a separate area of the animal art — Russian
“equestrian genre “ of the XIX century, which enjoyed its peak devel-
opment at the time. The Russian animal art was enriched with images
of horses, woven into the artwork of other art genres: landscape,
portrait, historical battle or household paintings. The Russian art
had known the image of horse before, for example, in OLd Russian
painting. However, the present article raises the problem of unique-
ness for this type of painting in Russia of that period, since equestrian
images represent particular, specifi c, non-modifi ed images, which are
different from the ceremonial portraits of the XVIII century and do
not follow the samples of Western animal art. They became evolved in
their iconography, visual and expressive properties, plot and thematic
preferences. The artists who worked in this fi eld showed professional-
ism and individual creativity
