The sources of income and the main expense items in the budget of gymnasiums for
boys of the West Siberian academic district (1885–1918) are analysed in the article. The author compares the material resources of the region with those of European Russia, and finds out features that were in particular connected with the activity of the territorial public authorities. On the basis of a wide variety of historical and pedagogical materials, the author traces the dynamics of gymnasiums’ sponsorship from the establishment of the academic district till its liquidation. The author also considers the economic and socio-educational importance of charity, and draws a conclusion about the considerable role of this social institution in the development of West Siberian secondary school.
