The paper covers the problem of search for the Christian ideal in the works of P. Chaadayev. In addition to Chaadayev’s main theme (search for the way of self-determination of Russia), in his philosophical works we can notice significant interest in Christianity as a social and anthropological phenomenon. It is shown that Chaadayev understood historical Christianity as a significant force affecting the real historical situation. At the same time, the historical Christianity is opposed in Chaadaev’s works to the ideal, forthcoming Christianity. The article reveals the features of the true Christianity,
as Chaadayev understood it. The continuity of Chaadaev’s ideas in the works of D.
Merezhkovsky is also shown.
