The principal questions, which are discussed in the article, are related to the development of piano texture in works of the WestEuropean romantic composers. The main feature of the evolution is a paradigm shift in the system of musical thinking in transition from the Viennese classicism to the romanticism. The change affected
genres, form constructing, and vocabulary of musical language. The author focuses attention on the following issues: correlations between highlight and background in piano texture, and influence of melody on texture.
