The article examines the possibility of systematic lexicographical representation of
idioms sharing the same semantic component in their structure. Analysis of idioms
containing the word Fire in the modern English language has shown that they can be
divided into three major groups. In each of these groups the word Fire has a specific
sense and allows for establishing associative connections with one of the three source
frames that are at the origin of idiomatic expressions with the word Fire in English. As
a result, it would be appropriate to group these idiomatic expressions in the dictionary
entry according to their relation to the source frame determined by the realisation of this
or that sense of the word Fire as the most stable element in their structure.
Key words: phraseology, polysemy, frame, linguo-anthropological approach,
lexicography.
