The article analyses Turgenev’s review of S. T. Aksakov’s book «A Sportsman's Sketches of the Orenburg Guberniya», with a focus on the origin of the following Turgenev's lines: «/…/ while reading about the black grouse, I came to an understanding that it's impossible to live better than the grouse does». Basing
analysis on Turgenev's ideas on the interaction of human beings and nature, the author demonstrates that it was Aksakov’s precise description of the black grouse that had enabled Turgenev to perfectly match the image of the bird with his views on the
nature and its mysterious ways.
