The article deals with the pseudo-stylistic auto-commentary (the author’s term) as a
special device for creating a comic effect. The author analyses some examples from
the text of H Laurie’s novel “The Gun Seller”, which has been little examined by
philologists. It is shown that the comic effect produced by the pseudo-stylistic autocommentary is based on the derision of speech stereotypes and the created absurd visual situation. Due to commenting on the text texture by the author/narrator, the attention of the recipient is switched from the main plot to the stylistic analysis of text components. The readers, apart from the pleasure of comic effect perception, have the possibility to look at set expressions, literary clichés, and rules of fiction text creation in a new way and, therefore, enrich their notion of the ways the language acts in speech.
K e y w o r d s: pseudo-stylistic auto-commentary, comic effect, stereotypes violation,
fiction text.
