The aim of the article is to demonstrate the huge potential of poetry in knowledge
gaining necessary for forming and developing intercultural competence. Poetical works
are viewed as cultural texts that reflct cultural values. The paper views language as a
special reflction of cultural values that regulate behaviour of members of a particular
society. The article highlights the importance of applying cultural linguistics to
investigating cultural elements of lexical units. The paper presents the dominant role of
a native culture in perception of foreign poetry.
