The paper presents the characteristics and main stages of development of regional online media. The researchers emphasise today’s relevance of glocalisation of the modern information and communication system. In this regard, regional online media become an independent component of this system. The relationship between the concepts “region” and “regional” is viewed to explore the essence of regional online media. The authors propose a defi nition of regional online media, analyse them and highlight their characteristic features and the main periods of development. In conclusion the authors give several reasons for the insuffi cient use of Internet technologies by regional online media.
