Social and Communicative Characteristics of Publius Nigidius Figulus’s Theory of Linguogenesis

D. A. Fedorov
Price: 50 руб.
The article reviews some aspects of the linguistic opinions of the prominent polymath of the late Roman Republic Publius Nigidius Figulus. Having undertaken a detailed analysis of the remaning fragments of the grammatical treatise «Commentarii grammatici», concerning the origins of language, the author traces the Figuli phonational and kinetic arguments in favour of the naturalistic concept of the origin of language. The dominant theme of the treatise, which demonstrates the desire of the Roman scholar to study nonverbal expressive means of communication, such as facial expressions and gestures, allows to categorize Nigidius Figulus as one of the fi rst messengers and unique ideological antecedents of the paralinguistics, a future science discipline. The article may be of interest for further research in the fi eld of the history of linguistics, ancient linguistic school of thought.
Keywords: ancient linguistics, language, protolinguistics, origin of language, Publius Nigidius Figulus, Commentarii grammatici.
