THE IMAGE OF A SOVEREIGN IN THE CAROLINGIAN ANNALS OF THE LATE 8 TH CENTURY

I. D. Gaivoronsky
Price: 50 руб.
The article is devoted to the monarch image formation in the Carolingian annals of the late 8 th century. The author considers the two main chronicles written in the last twenty years of the 8 th century – the “Royal Frankish Annals” and the “Continuations of the Chronicle of Fredegar”. In the author’s opinion, the Frankish annals were the first to contain the contours of the ideal sovereign image, which was relevant during the Carolingian period and then became an ideological basis of the didactic letters of Alcuin to monarchs, mirrors and biographies. This image was designed by anonymous annalists, based on the rich tradition of describing the Christian emperor’s duties, which was inherited by the Middle Ages from the late Antiquity, and, at the same time, the image was a proper response to the bright activity of the first Carolingians, first of all, Charlemagne (768–814), which resulted in the creation of a new Christian state – Frankish Empire.
Key words: image of a monarch, image of power, Charlemagne, Carolingians, annals,
Frankish Kingdom.
