 The creative and theoretical activities of the director Kamei Fumio, who studied in the
Soviet Union in 1929–1931, played a decisive role in forming of ethical and aesthetic
principles of fi lm documentation in Japan. The analysis of Kamei’s articles and interview makes it possible to justify the ambivalent status of the director, who was considered as a founder and defector from the Japanese fi lm tradition at the same time.
