The article examines the features of the metatextual representation of the author-addressee relationship in the German prose novel of the 15th–16th centuries. Three basic functional types of the metatext are described: “informative comment”, “motive comment” and “axiological comment”. The means of the author’s and addressee’s reference creating the  influence  on  the  addressee  (“motive  comment”)  are  speciਾed. As  a  result,  some forms of the author-addressee relationship as well as their communicative and pragmatic capacities are determined.
