The article is devoted to medieval Russian customs of war and traditional limitations
on periods of hostilities. Western Europe had periods of “God’s truce” – a ban on the
conduct of war imposed by the Church during certain quite long periods of the year
due to religious holidays. There was no similar phenomenon in Russia. Here, on the
contrary, wars often coincided with Easter, and a war against an enemy was compared
with spiritual warfare.
Key words: medieval Russia, history of warfare, military culture, religious traditions.
