The article explores the issue of distinguishing phraseological variability from the phraseological syn- onymy and covers the problem of phraseological antonymy. A
considerable part of the article deals with the analysis and comparison of different types of phraseo- logical variants, synonyms and antonyms characterising people’s appearance in the English and Russian languages. As a result of the analysis, conclusions were made on the current state of the problem of phraseological variability, synonymy and antonymy, as well as on certain similarities and differences
of these phenomena between the two languages.
