The paper discusses the theoretical basis of the cognitive approach in providing
psychological security of an individual. The cognitive component acts as a tool for
changing the mechanisms of perception and reflection, forming social consciousness
and behaviour and determining the behaviour strategy choice. The mechanisms’
characteristics, their place and importance in the assimilation of information by students
are shown. The author describes the results of the pilot study and reveals a relationship
between the level of knowledge and effectiveness of the perception mechanisms.
