Leo Gestel and expressionism of the Bergen school

 The article touches upon the problem of Leo Gestel’s artwork. The painter was one
of the outstanding representatives of the Bergen School – a group of Dutch artists
who worked in the expressionistic style. His own method was built on the latest
achievements of that time – Fauvism, Cubism and Expressionism. Gestel’s individual
approach to each of his canvases, his special attention to colour and form became a
distinctive feature of his art. The author compares his style with the style of several
masters of the Bergen School, views several paintings of Leo Gestel and determines
his fundamental artistic method.
