TRIZ in Innovation Management

TRIZ (the Russian acronym for the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, or TIPS) is nowadays gaining popularity among practitioners as well as academics, which results in a growing number of publications. TRIZ was initially created by G. Altshuller to solve technical problems, as the theory developed, attempts were made to apply its instruments in “softer”, non-technical areas. This paper presents an review of TRIZ applications in management or, more specifi cally, in innovation management, and features the results of the analysis that involved reviewing academic articles in line with a standardised systematic literature review approach. The paper also aims to fi nd out which methods are commonly used in combination with TRIZ and to identify current research gaps and problems. The annual number of journal publications on TRIZ has been gradually increasing since the end of 2007. A total of 99 articles were reviewed (from Scopus and ISI Web of Knowledge). The results of the review show that innovation management is one of the most common areas of applications for TRIZ. Quite often, instead of applying the whole TRIZ toolset, only several instruments, particularly TRIZ tools for uncovering and resolving contradictions are made use
of. The analysis revealed a signifi cant amount (over 30) of additional methodologies to be used in combination with TRIZ. In some cases they might serve as minor complementary instruments, whereas in other cases they act as comprehensive methodologies with embedded TRIZ elements. The most frequently mentioned problems related to TRIZ application are the complexity of the methodology and, consequently, increased subjectiveness and expert-dependency, insuffi cient integration with common IT tools and lack of verifi cation cases in industrial setting.
