Abstract. Music psychology covers many areas of study: the nature of emotional reactions to music; the ability to determine the spectrum of emotions; emotional reactions to the components of a musical composition or performance features. Music psychology exists at the intersection of other areas of knowledge. In this paper, we reviewed various studies on emotional reactions of children and adults to music, which were carried out in such areas of study as philosophy, pedagogy, psychology, art and music history, and music education. We analysed the results of these experiments. Their review is of particular importance for pedagogy since understanding the nature of emotional reactions to music makes it possible to introduce new practices of musical performance and listening into curricula in various areas in order to improve the effectiveness of education.
