Abstract. The article is devoted to the genre diversity of modern cinema and addresses the issues of defining a genre, the specificity of cinema as an art and as a matter of philosophical research. It traces the genre genesis of cinema and its gradual transformation into a universal matrix of modern art and culture. Cinema is seen as an essence of сontemporary media culture, performing an important anthropological function of social assembling and identification of the individual.
