Abstract. The article analyses the relationship between the views of two outstanding
thinkers of the 20th century on the dynamics of human religious feelings. This made it
possible to trace the influence of the crisis changes in the culture of the modern period on the worldview of a postmodern person. One of the most difficult issues of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century is touched upon: the structural transformation of a person’s internal attitudes to such phenomena and concepts as faith, meaning, freedom. The deep consequences of the existential upheaval turned out to be accompanied by the subject’s uncertainty about the stability of his position in the world. In return, the personality acquires an unregulated right to form existential meanings. However, the task of coping with it has not yet been solved.
