Abstract. The article is devoted to a number of difficulties in the modern philosophy of history on the issue of referential meaningfulness of a historical narrative. The author assesses the achieved level of knowledge about the ontological status of semantic innovation arising in a historical text, if interpreted as a narrative. The article considers the relevant aspects of the condition and overcoming of the opposition of representationalism (H. White, F. Ankersmit) and “non-representationism” (J.-M. Kuukkanen, P. Roth) in modern studies of historical narrative.
The author emphasises the perspective of studying the objects of the historical narrative ontology in the context of its analysis as a phenomenon of the processes of society’s communicative activity.
