In Russian and Western European still life paintings of the 18th century, various texts in the form of handwritten messages, font compositions in books, as well as musical notations are common motifs. Researchers interpret them as signs of intellectual occupations, also giving them philosophical and religious meanings. Russian still life artists, relying on the traditions of Western European art, were different in using
this motif.
Keywords: still life painting, text in a pictorial composition, font composition, manuscript, letter, book image, symbolism in painting.
