The symphony heritage by Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) includes 7 symphonies accompanied by programmatic symphonic poems. The composer was convinced that symphonies are a kind of absolute musical conceptions. But their status was qualifi ed by Sibelius as a Symbol of Faith which showed possibilities for studying several programmatic impacts on the symphony style and structure. Two of them were very
important literature sources for inspiration of the composer, particularly the Finnish epic poem “Kalevala” and Goethe’s “Faust”. They represent the subject matter of this paper. Furthermore, it was Anton Bruckner’s symphony concept admired by Sibelius that had a connection between two great phenomena of the worldwide culture: Goethe’s “Faust” and the Seven Symphonies by Jean Sibelius.
Keywords: “absolute” sym phonies, symphonic poem, fourmovement symphony, “sonata-in-one”, programmatic sources and references, Brucknerian models.
