Imagery Sources in Chinese Piano Compositions

The paper traces connection between traditional Chinese music and the fi gurative system of piano works composed by Chinese authors. The author considers the key philosophical concepts of harmony and golden mean, common for Chinese culture, and the embodiment of these concepts in instrumental pieces by Wang Jianzhong, Chu Wanghua, Li Yinghai. The basic elements of the Chinese philosophical thought, which fi nd their aesthetic refl ection in the piano music, are determined. The examples of piano compositions of the 20th century, presented in the paper, are analyzed in terms of preserving folk tradition in the fi gurative system and innovative elements, allowing composers to convey more accurately the spectrum of modern ideas and emotions
