Tan Dun’s Operas as a Refl ection of the Chinese Composer's Philosophy

Chinese composer Tan Dun is known as the author of chamber-instrumental, symphonic, opera, and fi lm music, he is a winner of international prizes and awards. He can be considered as a leader of the China’s musical avant-garde, which has been characterized by the following features: a stylistic unity of classical composing methods and avant-garde techniques; connection with the fundamental moments of the worldview, the religious and philosophical picture of the world, and traditions of the national culture that predetermine creative attitudes of composers; characteristic timbre colors, means of expressiveness and associated musical material due to sound ideals of culture; the traditional nature of creative thinking and the extraordinary signifi cance of the canon; preservation of national musical specifi cs in the context of world artistic culture. All these features of the musical avant-garde of China are manifested in the operas of Tan Dun, refl ecting the philosophy of the work of the Chinese composer, to which the зфзук is dedicated.
