The German broadsheet of the Baroque era seems to be a spectacular report on the events of the 17th century: battles, birth and death of historical fi gures, major political events, and astronomical phenomena are combined in it with news of miraculous incidents, monsters etc. However, the broadsheet can hardly be perceived as a news report. It becomes obvious when broadsheet is compared with other publicism and periodicals of that time. The format of newsletter acts as a means for creating a believable impression in the reader, which is emphasized by use of engravings. The more truthful news lies in the base of a broadsheet, the more acutely the question arises about its informativeness, about the nature of the transmission of information in it, and about the general artistic impression of this baroque synthetic work, which is the broadsheet.
Keywords: German broadsheet, 17th century, news, baroque, Battle of the Slaak.
