The Vocal Cycle “A Dream in the Red Chamber” by Chinese Composer Wang Liping: Refraction of National Traditions in a Modern Musical Form

The paper analyzes the vocal cycle composed by the modern Chinese composer Wang Liping «A Dream in the Red Chamber» unknown in Russian musicology. The vocal cycle consists of 10 numbers united by a single poetic content, in which the images of women of feudal China are revealed. The cycle was written for a high female voice (coloratura) and piano. The paper deals with the issues of musical form and content of this vocal cycle. As a result of the analysis of the musical and poetic material, the author reveals an interesting convergence of European and national traditions in creating a single musical form of a vocal cycle in the work of Van Liping «A Dream in the Red Chamber».
