Mily Balakirev’s «Grand Fantasy on Russian Folksongs» as an Experiment to Combine the National Melos with the Trends of European Musical Language

This paper provides an analysis of the concert “Grand Fantasy on Russian folksongs” in terms of synthesis between the national music and European musical language. The author gives a brief description of the work, as well as its distinctive features. The analysis showed that Mily Balakirev was able to refl ect the national features of Russian music in the concert work, which  was considered a breakthrough at the time, and helped pave the way for future composers who would turn to creating music on the themes of Russian folk songs.
