On the basis of art criticism, V. N. Petrov offers to evaluate the achievements of
the classical sculpture of the XVIII century. The research devoted to understand-
ing the meaning of the artistic heritage of the sculptor had been conducted by
V. N. Petrov for twenty years: the fi rst essays of articles (1957) from the unpub-
lished archival materials were included in the monograph on M. I. Kozlovsky
(1977). V. N. Petrov’s assessment of the master’s talent is in disagreement with the
opinion of the critical thinkers of late XIX — fi rst half of the XX century, but it is
this dissonance that allows us to raise the problem of rethinking the artistic heri-
tage, recognition of the achievements of Russian plastic art of the XVIII century.in
the age of transformation of understanding the beauty of the human body and the
heroism of human deeds. Struggle, suffering and protest are important qualitative
characteristics of the heroes of the Enlightenment era, which must be actualized
in their spectator experience, contemplating the morally sublime pathos of exam-
ples of the artistic heritage in Russian history. The original sculptural models of
M. I. Kozlovsky are in the exhibition collection of the Russian Museum.
