The paper considers Concerto No.1 composed by Anton Rubinstein in terms of history, playing technique and methodology. This composition is almost forgotten today. The author notes that the Concerto was the fi rst bright example of concerto genre in the
Russian piano music. In this music great virtuosity is in harmony with cantilence. The paper provides practical guidelines for developing different types of fi ne and gross motor skills, required for playing the Concerto. The author highlights signifi cance of the
composition for pedagogical training. It is stated that bringing the Concerto back into the educational repertoire can contribute to enriching the work at skill development and to improving the playing technique. Especially it matters for young Chinese pianists.
