The name of M. N. Barinova — a brilliant pianist and famous teacher
of the fi rst part of the XX century — is widely known to the musical
community. At the same time, another facet of this remarkable woman’s
talent remains almost out of sight. It is the fi rst time when the author has
covered only composing activity of the considered person, by providing
the biographical material related to teaching composition. The author
quotes statements of prominent Russian composers about Barinova’s
music, brings the facts of public performance of her compositions,
which confi rms a high level of M. N. Barinova’s composing skills.
However, due to various life circumstances, her mastery of composition,
unfortunately, has not received its further development and recognition
