Timbre is a characteristic feature of a musical instrument. When a musical instru-
ment is played, a pleasant, refi ned timbre acts not only as the expressive power
of the instrument itself, but it also becomes a requirement for the musician’s per-
forming skills and qualifi cation. It is worth noting that the saxophone has gained
worldwide fame due to the expressive power of its unique timbre sound. As a result,
an increasing number of people start learning how to play this instrument. Nev-
ertheless, if a person sets a goal to become a professional saxophonist, he or she
needs to achieve a high-quality timbre. It is necessary to keep in mind that certain
internal, hidden factors can infl uence it, such as: the material the instrument is
made of, manufacturing procedure, as well as external factors, namely the skill of
the musician, etc. The given paper outlines the basics of sound when playing the
saxophone. It also focuses on the analysis of the fact how the performing tech-
nique affects the timbre sound. In addition, the last part of the paper highlights
methods to improve the sound during playing. The main idea is to vary the timbre
depending on the confi guration and performing technique, as well as on the type
of music. Thus, the consistent analysis presented in the paper leads to a number
of conclusions that allow saxophone students to acquire mastery of timbre sound.
