The article deals with a special genre of a long Mongolian song, the
bucolic. The earliest steppe bucolic songs of the nomadic people of China
arose among the Sьnnu people. The long bucolic song has a lyrical, philo-
sophical and laudatory plot, the text depend on the place of performance.
The bucolic songs express homesickness, glorify steppe expanses, horses,
and have great emotional and psychological power. The tunes are chanting
and improvisable, the manner of performance is free. The Mongolian song
culture has common features with the songs of the Daur, Oirats, Khosheuts
and the Lower Volga Kalmyks, in which archaic and modern features are
closely intertwined.
