The article is devoted to consideration of visual drama in the
Hollywood scenario by S.M. Eisenstein “American Tragedy”,
1930. Based on the analysis of the reported individual frames,
scenes and episodes of the script, the author reveals a unifi ed
tone-light solution of the conceived fi lm, built on the opposition
of black and white, dark and light frames. Such a dramatic
structure of the scenario, in which a separate formal artistic
tool becomes a tool of a full-fl edged cinematic narration, is
determined by the author as an innovative solution for that time.
Keywords: screenwriting, visual drama, Eisenstein, American tragedy, screen version,
