The article describes the main trends in foreign language vocabulary teaching in middle 
school  on  the  basis  of  the  cognitive  and  communicative  approach.  Much  attention 
is given to the essence of the approach and the principles of vocabulary teaching in 
middle school. The authors give examples of tasks with the cognitive focus in teaching 
vocabulary to middle school students.
