The article deals with semantic and structural characteristics of the
lexeme norm exemplifi ed by entries from the British National Corpus.
The research was carried out in three stages and included the defi ni-
tion analysis, the structural and semantic analysis of the lexeme norm,
as well as the view of “norm” in terms of Michael Foucault’s doctrine
and the framework offered by the social semiotic theory and social
theories of language, which consider the norm as one of the possible
tools to exercise language power over certain institutions. The author
also focuses on the institutional role of the norm.
