This article is dedicated to the temporal features of Sergei Vasilievich Rakhmaninov’s symphonies, which is related to the permanent development of the Russian and Western Symphony genre in late 19th and early 20th centuries. There have been drawn parallels between the symphonic methods of Rakhmaninov and Gustav Mahler in terms of grotesque, separation of temporal layers of conception and a new variety of the program
conditionality. The article presents results of the brief historiographical survey aimed at scientifi c interpretations of Rakhmaninov’s late style.
