China traditional clothing color concept is an important part of the Chinese traditional culture, which infl uences the formation of Chinese traditional philosophy and aesthetic basics. With reference to certain historical material, the author explores ancient costumes in terms of color characteristics, as well as preferences and attempts
to determine directions of their development. It is noted that in the Chinese feudal society each clothing item bore its own specific symbolism, as a tool separating “us” from “them” and serving as an unambiguous marker of the feudal supremacy.
