The article analyses the soteriological aspects of the theology of Joseph Volotsky, an outstanding figure of Ancient Rus. The teaching of salvation is a central point in his theological views. The essence of Joseph Volotsky’s soteriology was determined by the low evaluation of the nature of a human as a sinful creature and the denial of his/her free will. According to Volotsky, a human being is saved first of all through faith, not through deeds. These ideas of Joseph Volotsky about the human soul salvation preceded the similar concept of Martin Luther.
