The article reflects an attempt to comprehend and characterize
the origin and development of genre painting in Russia. The political and social impact on the development of the genre and the specific historical environment that became the foundation for the flourishing of the genre painting in Russia of the 19th century
is explored. Some features of genre painting of the 20th century are also reviewed.
