The article discusses a range of issues related to rational exploration of the surrounding reality at the dawn of the Enlightenment. The search for bases of scientific knowledge is considered as one of the most basic issues. In particular, special attention in the proposed study is given to the problem of justification of the method as one of the most important bases of scientific knowledge. The article presents the main arguments of classical rationalism in its polemics with the main opposing directions in classical philosophy, mainly empiricism and sensualism.
