Saint Peter the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Vysoko- Petrovsky Monastery in Moscow: The Origin of the Architectural Form and the Issue of Attribution

P. G. Ershov
Price: 50 руб.
The article deals with the origin of the architectural forms of the Saint Peter the Metropolitan cathedral of the Vysoko-Petrovsky monastery in Moscow. Being very unusual for the Russian medieval art, its design is linked to the activity of the Italian masters that were invited to Russia during the reign of Ivan III and Vasily III. The architectural design of the cathedral is associated with practical embodiment of the Renaissance dream of “an ideal temple” as centric construction. However, an octahedral “fl ower” shape, unique for the Russian building tradition, was not typical for Italy of the second half of the 15th — early 16th century either. The architect (probably Alevisio the New) used some medieval or even antiquity forms as prototypes. Saint
Peter the Metropolitan cathedral may be regarded as a precursor of the fi rst steepled temple, i. e. the Ascension church in Kolomenskoe.
Keywords: Russian architecture of the late 15th — fi rst third of 16th century, Saint
Peter the Metropolitan cathedral of the Vysoko-Petrovsky monastery, Italian masters, octahedron (with eight apses), centric churches, “ideal church”, Alevisio the New.
