Modal verbs in the English language are characterized by a great number of their functions and a high degree of function merging. Functional approach to modal verb teaching does not give a comprehensive idea about the multifunctional system of these lexical units. Cognitive linguistics approach and cognitive metaphor analysis
offer a different understanding of the nature and organization of language, a more accurate, explanatory and more complete than the traditional view. Rather than perceiving language as a set of rules, cognitive linguistics approach considers the connection between the social-physical world and the structure of language itself.
